Shona's birthday was looming and we'd planned to meet 2 good friends from home, Clare and Tom, in the town of Bariloche the day before to celebrate the old girl turning 21…sorry 31! Arriving on an uncomfortable night bus from San Rafael having had no sleep, we made our way straight to the hostel and to meet up with the others. After a quick and very excited hello we headed into town to check it out and to organise a few days worth of activities. Bariloche is one of the main touristy towns of Argentina and is set in the stunning lake district. Woke up bright and early the morning of Shona’s birthday, gave her her present… ok it was only chocolate, local beer and a few silly bits but hey what do you buy the girl who has everything!?! Well she’s got me hasn’t she!!!!!! We’d decided to go white water rafting for Shona’s birthday so that morning we were picked up and driven off into the surrounding hills and to a small river inlet. Having squeezed into wetsuits and buoyancy aids we were soon slowly drifting down a crystal clear river, the rapids slowly got a little bigger, the river a little faster and before we knew it we were being tossed and thrown around and if the river didn’t manage to throw us out of the raft the instructor made sure we got wet!! That evening we all went out into town for a slap up meal and a few beers to toast Shona’s birthday properly. Over the next few days we explored a bit more of the lakes around town and also got convinced in to going to see a black glacier – foolishly we were expecting to see nice shiny black ice so when it turned out to be ice with some dirt on it we were a little disappointed!!
