From Bariloche and against all local advise we decided to head a little way south and to the bohemian town of El Bolson. Bolson had been in the firing line of the volcano for some time now so it was apparently dangerous to visit because of inhaling the ash – it’s meant to be a town full of hippies so I'm sure they've inhaled worse! In the 70's thousands of hippies came to El Bolson and have stayed since, well that was until a volcano dumped loads of ash on their town and now they have all evacuated! It was like a ghost town, nothing was going on at all, just a few stragglers and stubborn olds left (like our hospedaje owner who moaned for at least 30 minutes at us about the ash on her garden and roses!). The town is meant to host one of the best artisan markets in Argentina but when we saw it there was around 6 stalls and no customers to be seen!
