Left Torres behind and headed with Rob and Gemma across the border to Argentina and the town of El Calafate. Booked into a small hospedaje before heading off into town to check things out. Going to El Calafate was only about one thing, the Perito Moreno glacier! We'd decided instead of booking onto one of the many tour buses that leave from town we'd hire a car along with Rob and Gemma and make our own way out there. So the following day loaded up with picnic and waterproofs we drove the 90km out of town to see it. The glacier is one of only a few in the world that isn’t actually retreating (global warming and all that!), it’s about 250 km² of ice with the face being around 5km wide and 60 meters high! Along the main approach road you only catch small glimpses of the glacier so we decided to park the car about 1km before the main visitor’s area and trek across country a little to get our own private viewing first. It was huge, a sheet of blue ice drops straight into the water while the bulk of ice just disappears into the distance (obscured by cloud on this day!). We had a quick explore before joining the crowds at the main area where you can walk along platforms to get up close. Standing in front of the ice is amazing! The shapes, the colours, the size, the sounds…everything takes your breath away! Just listening to it creek and crack hoping and waiting to see a huge piece at the front crash into the water below can keep you entertained for hours – who'd of thought that watching ice could be so much fun but trust me it is!
