The next day from La Paz we headed out to Sorata, a small town set in the beautiful countryside and mountains between Copacabana and the Cordillera Apolobamba. The journey was a cramped one to say the least, 25 of us (including various livestock and crops) squeezed into a minibus designed for around 15, for a 4 hour journey! Just to make things worse on route we happened to witness an accident which resulted in an extremely squished minibus coming the other way, not sure how many were inside but it looked like they wouldn’t be getting out! Made the rest of the journey a slightly more nervous one but thankfully we arrived in Sorata in one piece and booked into the strangest hostal we’d encountered so far. It was an old colonial mansion that had been converted into a hostal and it was full of passages, locked doors, creepy hallways, old furniture and faded pictures on the walls with little old ladies wearing white dresses looking vaguely ghost like! We’d come to Sorata to go hiking in the mountains around the area but after speaking to a few people in town we soon realised this may be best done with a guide as there were no maps nor actual easy trails to follow. Turned out though that there were also no guides in town for the next few days!! So instead of getting deep into the hills we decided just to spend a few days exploring those closer to town where we couldn’t get too lost.
