There are somethings in this world with a prefix or suffix of ‘Great’: The Great War, Great Britian, The Great Depression, Cheese Grater and many more!! Some deserve the tag and others… well maybe not so much. The Great Wall of China however truly does deserve the tag, it’s construction was started around 2000 years ago and it spanned around 10,000km – although you can’t actually see it from the moon, contary to popular belief! But if you’re daft enough you can walk around 12km or so of it in 30 degrees heat! We started our walk from a town called Jinshanling, which is around 3 hours to the north of Beijing, from the town you could catch the odd glimpse of towers and turrets that are dotted every 500m or so along the wall but it’s only once you’re up on the top of the wall with it set out in front of you, snaking it’s way along the mountain ridge that you get to see it’s greatness. The walk is pretty much either straight up steep sections or back down equally as steep sections for 4 hours solid, which in the heat was a little sapping but it was well worth it – the views out across the fields and mountains are stunning and seeing more towers in front no matter how far you could see was crazy………. the great war killed 10 million peole – doesn’t sound that great; Great Britain – a union of countries that don’t like one another; One bloody long wall in China definitely great!
