So the journey begins and Quito is a fantastic place to start off our little jaunt around South America. Flying staight into a city that is around 2,850m above sea level and shadowed by Volcano Pichincha means that we should spend the first day just taking it easy and acclimitizing to the altitude… so whats the first thing we do, climb to the park that has views over the whole city for breakfast swiftly followed by a visit to the Basilica (Cathedral) and climbing to the top of that too. It wasreally cool though! We were climbing up vertical rickety old metal ladders on the outside of the tower for great views. Quito old city is lovely, full of plaza's, old colonial buildings and lots of character, whereas the new city is the place to be for bars, restaurants and nightlife – oh and to get mugged if you believe the hype but we didn't have any issues at all. Just outside of town is a teleferic (cable car) that takes you from around 3,000m up to 4,000m and to the start of a walk that takes you up the summit of the volcano – as tempted as we were we didnt go to the top, think my lungs need a bit more time to get use to no air!
