Having wasted some of our re-coup’d energy in Puerto Escondido on beach runs we then promptly jumped on a night bus and didn’t sleep a wink so arrived in San Cristobal feeling shattered! What’s more when we arrived at 6:30am the hostel didn’t have our room ready so we opted for a quick nap on a bench instead and then made full use of the free breakfast! Walking around this pretty little town you suddenly get the feeling you are back in hippy traveller territory, its been a while but it’s back to baggy trousers and dreads. San Cristobal is an arty kinda place too, its full of little shops and market stalls selling local handy crafts and imported local handy crafts! Exploring the other main market where the indigenous folk hang out was an eye opener (stomach turner) too as you can buy offal or stripped cow heads! So its basically one of those towns where you just wander the streets and take it all in, it actually has a bit more of a European feel to it, probably all the little cafes and bars, oh and french patisseries. On our last night here we went into town and stumbled across a small feista going on, there was little stage and a Mexican ska band getting into their groove whilst some street artists showed off their talents. One of the things to see whilst in town is Canyon del Sumidero, a stunning canyon an hour or so away and a cool little boat ride. We jumped in a little overloaded boat and whizzed down the river and through the huge and thin canyon spotting crocodiles as we went.
