From a town full of criminals we took an overnight trip to a town full of beetles, yet more bloody scousers… ooooh, not those kind of beatles! We left Mexico city by local bus and headed down to the small town of Taxco, a stunning little place built on the side of a steep mountain and a maze of small cobbled lanes, markets, churches and plaza’s… it is also home to more VW Beetle taxis than people to give taxi rides too. We found ourselves a tiny quaint hostel hidden away in one of the many backstreets near a buzzing (with flies as well as people) food market, there were about 30 food stalls set out in a dirty little market area with all the vendors shouting at you their tasty offerings – was a little baffling at first but once we settled on what we wanted the food was great. After tasting all we possibly could fill our bellies with it was time to explore the town which instantly meant walking straight up or straight down a very steep hill. It was one of those towns that gave you a slight feel of what a country was like maybe 40 years ago but signs of change are creeping in along with the odd tour bus of us tourists, which means pizza places and coffee shops are popping up (it’s what every international traveller craves!) although at least everything is still being built in keeping with the old. So when not walking up hills or getting lost down little alleyways just watching people and the Beetle taxis whizzing around the narrow streets was good fun, think the Italian job but with Beetles. It was only a short stopover and a break from the city but a cool little town and great fun for a day or so.
