Everyone we’d so far met in Mongolia had been lovely, from the locals in small villages, to random nomads who even though very inquisitive seem reluctant to approach us at first and the families we visited in their Gers etc etc. Now cities being cities unfortunately attract some chancers who will try and take advantage of others and Ulaan Baatar is no different. There are a lot of people in the city who have nothing and survive on nothing and so they see us travellers as easy pickings…..well not this traveller! We were wandering down one of the main streets when I suddenly felt like I was being pinned in slightly, the guy in front had let Shona pass him but suddenly was walking very slowly whilst the guy behind me was getting a little bit too close for comfort – I kinda of twigged what was going on thankfully as it all happened quite quick! I’d left my wallet in my shorts pocket having just used it and as I was walking felt a hand or something on my leg, as I turned round a very shocked looking Mongolian stood there with one hand holding a jacket and the other hand hidden inside the jacket, I quickly grabbed his hand and threw aside the jacket to reveal my wallet! I whacked him in the stomach and knee’d him in the you know whats….ok, I didn’t really, I just grabbed the wallet, gave him a little shove and a very stern and disapproving look – I’m so tough me, citizens of UB and fellow travellers rest at ease Nathan’s here!!!
