Cheated and flew to Iquitos, this is Peru's jungle town in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, it can be reached by either a 5 day very uncomfortable boat trip or a 2 hour plane ride – no choice really! Arrived in the hussle and bustle of Iquitos and took a tuc-tuc to the middle of town, seemed more Asian than South American, what with the humidity and tuc-tucs everywhere. Booked into a hostal for the night next to a big muddy contributory river that feeds the amazon. The following day we jumped in a small boat and headed for the jungle – the boat was unable to make it through some of the reeds to our huts so we ended up trekking through the jungle, with backpacks, in knee deep stagnent water and very hungry mosquitos everywhere! Finally reached our home for the next few nights very sweaty and covered in bites, Nathan had around 80 on his back alone…ouch! The next few days were spent exploring the river, piranha fishing, jungle trekking, pink river dolphin spotting and generally trying to avoid any more mosquitos which was very difficult. Got back to Iquitos mid full blown local festival, Amazonian snake women, caperio dancers, tribal music, firebreathers and of course some really bad jugglers with dreadlocks…they get everywhere! Sat and had dinner and a beer in a strange iron building designed by some guy called Effiel, apparently his well known in Paris!
